The auction process at Sotheby's

Lots from all sales are publicly displayed for approximately 3-7 days prior to the actual auction of those lots.

Catalogues for each sale are available approximately one month before the auction. These include a detailed description, provenance, history, notes on bibliographic references and estimates for each lot.

Online catalogues are also available (in English, French and Italian) at www.sothebys.com approximately one month before each auction. To access this information, visit the sale calendar and click on download catalogue next to the auction of your choice.

You can bid for a lot at a Sotheby's auction by attending the sale itself or by completing and returning the 'absentee bid form' found at the back of any Sotheby's catalogue. Purchase order forms are also available online.

In some cases, Sotheby's will accept bids from prospective buyers by telephone. For selected sales you can also bid online at www.sothebys.com.

Sotheby's charges a commission to the buyer in addition to the winning bid, (also known as the 'hammer price') which is payable towards the total purchase price.
